In preparation for my upcoming residency, I’ve been doing micro-experiments in various mediums. For example, since the Apple Vision Pro was announced recently, I’ve been looking into augmented reality (AR) as a way to combine my experience in programming and art.
After dabbling a bit, I can see how I could use it for my residency, but I also felt like I was working backwards, like a hammer in search of a nail. I’m not convinced that AR is the right medium for the stories I want to tell, but the experiment was still worth it because it gave me the data I needed to circle back to animation.
My next experiments have involved 3D animation. For example, here’s me simulating claymation with collision physics:
And here’s me practicing my sculpting and character design skills:
These experiments have been way more fun than the AR stuff – my brain’s been lighting up in ways that it hasn’t in years! I’ve also been thinking about how to combine the 3D with my previous experiments in 2D animation.
However, like I said earlier, all of this ultimately has to be in service of story. If I focus on learning new techniques, I’m just collecting new tools while avoiding the real risk of telling a cohesive and compelling narrative.
I have the technical skills. At this point, it’s a matter of courage.

Wow! Thanks for the shout-out <3
I really like where you land on this. It sometimes takes courage to trust yourself. And courage to do the scary thing -- possibly the thing you don't even know that you're going to do, until you do it. I'm excited for you to be going on this adventure.
