In our last episode1, we were starting our Hero’s Journey but got stuck at the precipice – afraid to make the leap!
So who can help?
Your mentors!
You’ll notice that next step on the Hero’s Journey is meeting the mentor.
If we refer to our previous examples, we have:
Harry meets Hagrid
Luke meets Obi-Wan (and eventually Yoda)
Odysseus literally asks someone named Mentor!
A mentor is someone who has been down the path you’re considering. They have earned wisdom and can help you avoid the same blind spots they did.
Unlike a movie where you often have one in-person mentor, you have the benefit of many online mentors who can guide you on your journey.
Online mentors
One such guide is
.He left his prestigious consulting job in 2017 and has experimenting and sharing ever since.
He’s written a fantastic book on pursuing a pathless path and hosts a podcast interviewing fellow pathless people.
If Paul is the Yoda who imparts veteran wisdom, then there are also Han Solos and Rebel Alliance members – folks who are on their own journeys but are able to help out and even collaborate!2
I’ve been hanging out on Twitter more these past few months and there are so many cool people sharing their progress in public.
Check them out!
Find your mentors
Another great thing about online mentors is that you have a direct line of communication from wherever you live.
Many DMs are open – including mine!
It’s reassuring to talk through your fears, to see that others have made the jump and survived.
I certainly wish I had that opportunity, so I’m trying to pay it forward.
I’ve taken calls with multiple friends and recent Twitter acquaintances since leaving my job, and it’s been my pleasure to help however I can.
If you’re interested, you can book a (free) call here or find me on Twitter at heykzhai.
Until next time!
Does this metaphor work? Why do I keep referring to Star Wars when I’ve never watched it??
